Drawing on the rich multiplicity of emotions displayed on social media, an AI analyzed Instagram photos with geolocation tags in São Paulo during the event, discerning the emotional undertones embedded within each image. During the Virada Cultural 2020, the cityscape transformed into a canvas for self-expression, as the emotions captured in thousands of selfies were projected onto urban buildings in three neighborhoods.
These projections juxtaposed the raw, unfiltered emotions of São Paulo's residents with playful animations of the character 'Suadinho' by artist André Gola. Using animations of 'Suadinho' to represent the emotions of the persons of each picture, we seek to create a dialogue between human sentiment and digital expression

At the heart of this installation lies a dataset of facial images categorized according to the seven universal emotions proposed by Paul Ekman. This dataset served as the foundation for training a Neural Network, enabling it to detect and interpret the emotional content of each face it encountered. Through this innovative approach, approximately 10,000 selfies were analyzed, offering insights into the emotional landscape of São Paulo's social media users.
Beyond the spectacle of animated projections, the installation prompts viewers to contemplate the profound interplay between social media, emotions, and self-perception. During the installation, we were seeking to obtain some kind of measure of the distribution of feelings in the set of posted images, in addition to projecting the analyzed faces together with the animations of ‘Suadinho’, who interacted with the selfies.
